Weddings

Cottage and backyard weddings

A cottage country wedding is a full day outdoors, in light that changes hour to hour, at a venue that is usually somebody’s family property rather than a room built for weddings. It is the day that rewards knowing the ground.

Coverage is documentary. The ceremony and the speeches happen without being interrupted, portraits are made quickly while the light is good, and the rest of the day is photographed as it goes.

    Getting ready through to the last of the sparklers. The parts people remember are rarely the scheduled ones.

  • Cottage and backyard weddings

    A ceremony on the family dock, in the backyard or on the lawn above the lake. Ground never built for weddings, and knowing where to stand on it is most of the job.

  • Portraits that take twenty minutes

    Made quickly, in the light that is actually available, so nobody spends their own wedding being arranged. Everything else is documentary.

  • Elopements and small weddings

    Just the two of you, or a dozen people on a dock. Booked for the hours it actually needs, not a full-day package.

Engagements

Engagement sessions and surprise proposals

An engagement session is the practice run. Most couples have never been photographed together properly, and forty minutes of it beforehand changes how the wedding day goes.

Almost no posing: a place to stand, a direction to walk, then photographing what happens in between. The ring gets its own few frames, because nobody remembers to ask for them.

For a surprise proposal, the time and the spot are agreed with the person proposing. The moment is photographed from a distance so nothing gives it away, then a short session follows once the answer is in.

Sessions run about an hour. Galleries include files sized for save-the-dates.

Autumn

Fall photography

Autumn in cottage country is short: about three usable weeks, and everybody wants the same two weekends in them. Sessions are scheduled late in the day, when the sun comes through the leaves rather than down onto them. Ask about dates in the summer rather than in September.

Families

Family photography at the cottage

Sessions happen where a family already spends time: your cottage, your own shoreline, a trail nearby. Observational, with very little posing, because the frames families keep are rarely the ones where everybody was looking at the lens. Plan for about an hour. Small children give you roughly forty good minutes.

    At your cottage, on your own shoreline or on a trail nearby. Where a family already spends time is where children behave like themselves.

  • Extended family at the lake

    The summer when everyone is finally in the same place is the summer to photograph it. Grandparents, cousins, the whole dock.

A set a small business can use across a website and a year of social posts without every image looking the same. Photographed while the business is working.

How a booking runs

    Say what it is for

    A wedding, an engagement session, a family afternoon or a set for a website. The purpose changes the shot list more than the location does.

  2. 02

    Pick the time

    Sessions are scheduled for the light where possible, which usually means late in the day. Overcast is not a problem: flat light is kind to faces.

  3. 03

    The session

    Photographed as it happens rather than posed. A few arrangements to get people into decent light, then what happens between the instructions.

  4. 04

    Preview then full set

    A preview within a few days. A session gallery within two weeks, a wedding gallery within four to six depending on the season.

Where do you photograph weddings?

Across cottage country: the Kawarthas, Bancroft, Baptiste Lake, Lake St. Peter, Barry's Bay, Maynooth and the lakes around them. Most are at lakeside venues or family properties rather than in a hall, which is the kind of day this work suits best. Travel beyond that region is quoted with the booking.

How much wedding coverage do we need?

Most cottage country weddings are booked as full-day coverage, because the day runs from getting ready through to the sparklers and the parts people remember are rarely the scheduled ones. Shorter coverage suits an elopement or a ceremony-and-portraits booking. Tell us the shape of the day and you will get a written quote for the hours it actually needs.

Do you do engagement sessions as well?

Do you photograph backyard weddings and elopements?

What happens if it rains?

Sessions are rescheduled for weather that genuinely will not work. Overcast is not one of those days: flat light is kind to faces and is often better than full sun. Weddings go ahead in the rain, with the portrait timing moved around the worst of it.

How long until we see the photographs?

A preview goes out within a few days. A full session gallery follows within two weeks, and a wedding gallery within four to six depending on the time of year. Mini sessions are faster because the set is smaller.

Do you photograph families and small businesses too?

Yes. Cottage family sessions, owner portraits, team photography, workspaces, shops and studios are a large part of the work here, and the approach is the same: photograph the place and the people working rather than staged.

Do you photograph Airbnbs?

Yes, but that sits with the property work rather than here. Short-term rental and cottage rental photography is on the real estate and Airbnb page, where the packages and prices are published in full.
